Breath Pavilion

2019
PAVILION DESIGN

Spirulina, or blue-green algae, is a photosynthetic organism that feeds on carbon dioxide while releasing oxygen. The pavilion, a landscape composed of vessels cultivating the algae, filters the air and creates a refuge for the festival grounds by providing a space for meditation and breathwork. Sitting amongst the mosaic of greens, one might become aware of the symbiosis between their breath and the algae production, thus made more conscious of their breathing.

The pavilion consists of modular terracotta pots that contain the algae; the module size based on the anthropometric dimension of the sitting position. Curved walls encircle the communal and private meditative spaces while their exterior function as exhibition walls.

During the lifespan of the pavilion, festival-goers can observe the rituals of algae being cultivated and harvested and learn more about its benefits. Declared a form of superfood for humans, spirulina is packed with nutrients, antioxidants and protein. The spirulina harvested from the pavilion is a source of ingredient for the experimental cafe, where visitors can partake in food and beverages made from the algae as part of the experience.

At the end of its lifespan, the pavilion can be deconstructed back into the terracotta vessels and be given to festival-goers to be reused as plant pots.
