RESEARCH, WRITING

“The sky filled with the luminous debris
of ancient, incomprehensible machines”
—Robert Charles Wilson, Axis

“We live in an age in which extremely expensive machines are made and installed in orbit without public knowledge, only to be spectacularly blown away and become total losses before our eyes.”
—Lisa Parks, Orbital Ruins

Lucy in the Sky with Debris is a research and visual art project responding to the space debris problem. Merging astronomy, cartography, mythology, and material culture, it generates a layered reframing of the planetary issue, exploring alternative ways to communicate the environmental problem that parallels the ecological crises on Earth. This body of work is composed of Errant Stars(2024), a kinetic light installation that is generated from orbital data of space debris, and To Draw a Line(2024), a braided essay that weaves together fieldnotes from a trip to a radio telescope in the desert, research, and art-making.
